DJing a three-hour music set tonight from 8PM to 11PM Eastern, centered around the 1966 recording of Sammy Davis Jr. and Buddy Rich performing “Come Back to Me” at the Sands Casino. Will be spinning jazz, big band, lounge– bringing it up with anything that has an attitude and swings, and bringing it back down with anything that lays back and chills.  Link to the Shoutcast stream via Amber Horizons radio in the sidebar.  Be there or…  y’know.

update: might delay the start of the formal program by 30-60 minutes, but music will be on from 8PM.

Good Answer, But No

Ace:  Zeus punished Prometheus for giving fire to mankind by having him chained to a rock with his arms and legs spread out, so he was helpless.  And then every day, a giant eagle would soar down from the sky, tear open his body with its beak, and eat his liver.  But it didn’t kill him.  Prometheus was immortal, and every night his liver would magically grow back.  So every day the eagle would come again, and every day Prometheus would have to suffer through that same awful, excruciating pain, over and over and over again, forever. [pauses]  He was rescued eventually, though.  Someone else set him free.  Can you think of who that might have been?

(This is the last part of a series of posts telling a single story.  You can read the previous post HERE, or go read the whole thing from the beginning.)

Rael laughed when I told him, but he didn’t write it off either. “Interesting,” he said. “You think she’s right?”

“No,” I responded. “Well… yes. Well…” I shrugged. “There’s a historical disparity between my perception of myself and other people’s perception of me. The two rarely meet.”

“Have you ever been tested?” he asked.

“No.” I downed a glass of water he had provided for me. “Dude. She’s my ex-wife. Obviously she has a long-standing familiarity with my, err… habits. Just as obviously she has certain opinions of me she’s not interested in changing. You tell me.”

“Hmm,” he hummed, mildly. “Okay, well– let me ask you this. Knowing what you know now, when you look back, do you feel like your personal history has been defined in part by a marked inability to concentrate?” Read the rest of this entry »

Why?

My son now has a Kindle.

He paid for it himself, with money he saved up from his birthday and other gift-giving occasions.  And he apparently did some cost/benefit analysis regarding various e-readers, assessing weight and price and visibility in daylight and a few other things I’ve forgotten.  So I really don’t have anything to say about it, at least with regard to dismissing it as an impulse buy on his part, or bemoaning it as one more addition to the sheer number of gadgets he has.  I just don’t get why he wants it.  He doesn’t do a tremendous amount of reading on his own, outside of his school assignments.  His favorite sort of reading is to have me read to him, at bedtime.

He did comment that now it would no longer be necessary for him to go the Library, because if there was a book he wanted, he could just download it.  Although he conceded that there would be a fee to do so, and that the presence of a Pay to Download structure was something that required some additional thought and responsibility (and money.)  He’s already familiar with such a structure from downloading games for his DSI through the Nintendo store.

His mother, meanwhile, having apparently enabled his downloading through her Amazon account, is now trying to figure out how to disable the One Click Buy controls, which suggests she doesn’t have much confidence in his ability for self-moderation…

Our bud Ylva got together with a couple of friends and started an SL blog, then asked D and I to do some writing for it.  You can find it here:

EclecticSL

…and through a navigation link in the sidebar.

I’m happy to do it, but really:  at this point, I’m now intermittently posting stuff about SL in two blogs, a forum, a Flickr account and a Facebook account.  And that’s not counting the content I have to produce to list Tiphareth Designs on the Marketplace.  Maybe I should think about consolidating…

Today is Jack’s birthday.  Hooray!

I have to pick him up.  I woke up relatively early, then fell back asleep, then dreamed that I woke up much, much later, to discover that all the clocks in the house were broken, and my cel phone was shorted out, and I was very, very late picking him up.  So I called Weaver to apologize for not being there on time to pick him up, and told her I’d throw myself in the shower and be there in five minutes flat.  And then I woke up.  Not much, much later, but later.  But still early enough to be on time to pick him up.

Unless I keep typing.
